The library is a growing organism

It is an accepted biological fact that a growing organism alone will survive. An organism which ceases to grow will petrify and perish. The Fifth Law invites our attention to the fact that the library, as an institution, has all the attributes of a growing organism. A growing organism takes in new matter, casts off old matter, changes in size and takes new shapes and forms.

Uitgangspunt zijn de 5 wetten van Ranganathan uit 1931 (Five Laws of Library Science), die in dit rapport onderzocht en hertaald naar de situatie in 2014 worden.

“Books are for use” wordt “Develop the physical and technical infrastructure needed to deliver physical and digital materials”
“Every book its reader” wordt “Increase the discoverability, access and use of resources within users’ existing workflows”

Het rapport is vlot geschreven, dus schrik niet van de omvang, je bent er zo doorheen. Mij vielen een paar dingen op. Ten eerste de sterke mate waarin dit aansluit bij Zoeken en Vinden. Ten tweede het feit dat onze medewerkers meer dan ooit onze ‘unique selling point’ zijn. Ten derde het feit dat ik geen feilloos inzicht meer heb in studenten (Amerikaanse studenten gebruiken Amazon als discovery tool? Really?). Kortom: ik voel me bevestigd als projectleider Z&V, gewaardeerd als medewerker en… een tikkeltje oud.
